The following statement from about the January 10, 2022 Fairfield City Council Meeting and the Letter of Intent addressing equality and fairness can be attributed to ACLU of Iowa Executive Director Mark Stringer.
"The letter of intent tabled by the Fairfield City Council on Monday simply states that the City of Fairfield supports fairness and inclusion of everyone, and that it won't discriminate against anyone. That should not be controversial among city officials.
Treating everyone equally and with dignity, as the letter of intent states, is the foundation of fair and good government.
It’s important to note that the law requires the government, including the City of Fairfield, to treat people fairly and equally and not discriminate. We were appalled to hear some city council members express disagreement with those long-held American principles.
Adopting a statement that affirms those legal obligations is an appropriate thing to do, but it's important to recognize that those rights to equal treatment are not subject to a city council vote."
