Des Moines, Iowa — The ACLU of Iowa is pleased to announce that it has hired Pete McRoberts as policy director.
In the full-time, permanent position, McRoberts will be responsible for advancing the ACLU of Iowa’s broad civil liberties agenda at the statehouse. He’ll also work statewide and at the county and community level across the state on legal and policy issues.
McRoberts has worked previously as a contract lobbyist for the ACLU of Iowa. "After several years of working with him, we are delighted to add Pete and his always professional and principled approach to our full-time team. I’m confident he will continue to be instrumental in protecting and advancing civil liberties in our state," said ACLU of Iowa Executive Director Mark Stringer.
McRoberts brings to the position 17 years of policy experience, previously serving as an aide to state, national, and world leaders. In addition, for five years as an attorney in private practice, he represented clients with low incomes on behalf of the Iowa State Public Defender. For the past six years, he was the owner of Dash Management, Inc., a government relations and executive management service, advising nonprofit and business associations.
McRoberts began his career in 1994 as a member of the first class of the AmeriCorps NCCC national service agency and was appointed to its national advisory board in 2012. He served as board chair from 2015 to 2019.
He is a graduate of Drake Law School, the University of Northern Iowa, and Hawkeye Community College. He is a member of the Iowa Bar and is a certified mediator.
