Diversity of Candidates for the ACLU of Iowa Board of Directors
Candidates have been nominated by the ACLU of Iowa Governance Committee and approved by the ACLU of Iowa Board of Directors in accord with our tradition of seeking and maintaining diversity of background and viewpoint on our board.
The ACLU of Iowa is committed to ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse organization. Equity assures meaningful opportunities for recruitment and advancement for all employees, potential employees, and lay leaders of the ACLU and provides a framework for ensuring a truly inclusive workplace. Diversity is one outcome of achieving genuine equity and inclusion and it creates more vibrant decision-making informed by varied perspectives and experiences, making the ACLU representative of and relevant to the heterogeneous population of the United States. Equity also provides a framework for ensuring the engagement of all of the nation’s populations in the defense of civil liberties.
Therefore, the ACLU of Iowa strives to ensure that elected membership on the Board of Directors represents the categories of women, racial and ethnic minorities, and the self-identified categories of sexual minorities and persons with disabilities, as delineated by ACLU national board policy. It also strives to be inclusive of other aspects of diversity including, but not limited to, age, marital or family status, education, political affiliation, employment, equity or income level, religion or lack thereof, color, national origin or current citizenship, or geographic location of residence within the state.
